FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

rooster

Can I return/recycle my empty cans at the Brewery?

You certainly can! Pun intended! Bring your empty cans to the pub and the host will reimburse you your MI deposit. At this time, we only accept Brewery Vivant cans for recycling/reimbursement.

Do you use alternative energy?

We are 100% renewably powered through Consumer's Energy Green Generation program. (It's a mix of wind and landfill gas recapture, all done in Michigan.)  In addition we hope to soon be adding some solar panels to our brewery roof.

What is the origin of your name?

We wanted a French sounding name since we make Belgian and French inspired beers and food. Many people are familiar with the term Bon Vivant, which means someone who loves the "good life" and is usually used in terms of food and drink. So we chose Vivant based on that connection and the fact that it is somewhat easy to pronounce. We put Brewery as the first part which is the standard in Europe.

When were you established and by whom?

We opened on December 20, 2010 after 2 years of planning. Jason and Kris Spaulding are the owners.

Where can I buy your beer (where is Vivant distributed?)

Michigan and Chicagoland. The stores and restaurants/bars we are sold in vary over time but you can usually find our beer in specialty stores and many grocery stores. If you don't see BV available at your favorite spot within MI/Chicago...ask for it!!

You can also buy beer to go right out of our pub!

What is the size of your brew house?

We have a 20-barrel brew kettle and an assortment of 20, 40, and 60-barrel fermentation tanks, as well as a couple maturation tanks (two of which are repurposed dairy tanks!).

How many barrels do you produce per year?

In 2015 we hit our goal (in fact surpassed it a bit) of 5,000 barrels at year.  In 2016 we hope to reach that goal again and possibly make even more beer than in 2015.

Do you offer tours of your facilities?

We do!  We do public tours on Saturdays at 3:30pm.  We cap them at 35 people and it's first-come, first-served.  If you are interested in a private tour contact Ward at ward@www.breweryvivant.com and we'll see what we can do to set up a private tour.

Do you take reservations?

No.  We do not take reservations and operate on a first-come, first-served basis. If you have an event that you would like to reserve our semi-private event space (only available to rent from Sunday through Thursday) for please contact Ward at ward@www.breweryvivant.com

How did you choose your location?

We wanted to be in a neighborhood setting that was walkable/bikeable and had a community feel going. Our plan had always been to be a Belgian/French inspired brewery and pub so we were looking for a location that we thought could match that. When we saw the building we now occupy we knew we found the perfect location.

Does your organization have a vision/mission statement and if so what is it?

We take inspiration from the Belgian and French traditions to make an artistic style of beer that is uniquely ours by incorporating our love of great food and the use of local ingredients.  Our business is run with a mindful eye on our environmental impact, a strong relationship with our community, and a healthy economic result.

How do you define sustainability?

Considering the impacts of our decisions on the environment, the people around us and our financials.

What is B Corporation Certification and why did you pursue it?

B Certification assesses many aspects of a business, including corporate governance, employee relations, community commitment and environmental footprint. Certified B Corporations are also legally required to consider the impact of their decisions on people and planet in addition to profit. We became certified in May of 2014 and chose to pursue it to protect our core mission of sustainability, gain access to a network of like-minded businesses, and challenge ourselves to continue to improve.

What is Bicycle Friendly Business Certification and why did you pursue it?

This certification is awarded to employers that encourage a more welcoming atmosphere for employees, customers and the community as it relates to bicycles. The League of American Bicyclists administers the program and looks at the following areas in their assessment process: encouragement, engineering, education and evaluation & planning. We became a Silver level Bicycle Friendly Business in September of 2014.

What are the criteria for LEED certification?

LEED has various prerequisites and optional credits under a number of areas. Those are sustainable sites, water efficiency, energy & atmosphere, materials & resources, indoor environmental quality, and innovation & design.

What motivated you to have a sustainability mission?

In our personal lives, we have always been passionate about environmental and social issues. That tied with Kris’s experience and knowledge gained on the environmental team at Herman Miller made sustainability a natural fit. Overall though, we think it's simply the right thing to do.

What are key sustainability points about the brewery building?

South facing windows provide natural light and limit our electricity needs during day. The glycol cooling system for our beer tanks was up-sized slightly so it could also cool the cooler our draft beer is housed in. Our brewery equipment came from Wisconsin, some was even refurbished dairy equipment! To light the brewery, we were able to reuse fluorescent lights that we found in the building by upgrading them to be more efficient.

How does Brewery Vivant incorporate sustainable practices into the business model on a day to day basis?

We have a set of 14 environmental and social goals that we measure and report on annually (go here to see what they are and how we are working towards them). Having this measuring stick and the transparency of public reporting ensures that we are always keeping them top of mind in our daily operations. We also have all employees go through a sustainability class so they know what our philosophy is, what those goals are and what their role is. That helps get everyone engaged and on board. The best part of engaging our staff is that they also feel empowered to come to us with ideas to improve.
